FAQs – Frequently Asked Questions

What is Polymer Clay?

Polymer clay is a type of hardenable modeling clay based on the polymerpolyvinyl chloride (PVC). It typically contains no clayminerals, but like mineral clay a liquid is added to dry particles until it achieves gel-like working properties, and similarly, the part is put into an oven to harden, hence its colloquial designation as clay. Once cured (baked), polymer clay is waterproof and doesn’t need to be sealed against moisture. This is because it’s oil-based, rather than water-based like air-dry clays are.

How Take Care of my Jewelry?

Polymer clay is waterproof, but is delicate and should be handled with care. When metals are attached with the clay art, you shouldn’t expose the jewelry to moisture. To keep it looking its best, avoid exposing it to extreme temperatures. As tempting as it may be to bend your earrings to see the flexibility, PLEASE DON’T! They can become weak and break. When not in use, store it in a dry and cool place, preferably in a jewelry box or pouch. To clean it, gently wipe it with a soft cloth. Do not use any chemicals or solvents, because they can damage the surface of the clay. With proper care, your polymer clay art jewelry will stay beautiful and last for a long time. Here are some steps that you can follow:

  1. Avoid contact with any chemicals: Polymer clay is waterproof, but water can damage the jewelry. So, avoid wearing your polymer clay jewelry while swimming, showering or doing dishes.
  2. Handle with care: Avoid dropping or banging it against hard surfaces.
  3. Store properly: Store your polymer clay jewelry in a dry and cool place. Avoid exposure to direct sunlight or extreme temperatures.
  4. Clean gently: Use a soft and dry cloth to gently clean your polymer clay jewelry. Avoid using any abrasive materials or chemicals that can damage the surface.
  5. Avoid contact with perfumes and lotions: Perfumes, lotions and other beauty products can damage the surface of the jewelry. Apply them before wearing your jewelry or wait until they have been absorbed before putting on your jewelry.
  6. Wear regularly: Wearing your polymer clay jewelry regularly can actually help keep it in good condition. The natural oils from your skin can help protect and maintain the surface of the jewelry.

Tips of Maintenance and Solving Problems:
    – We always, after bond our studs (earrings back) with flexible super glue, we also cover them with uv resin to secure. Unfortunately, depending in how hard we manipulate polymer clay earrings, eventually them can come off. You can use a flexible superglue such as Loctite Gel Control, Zap-a-Gap, or Gorilla Glue GEL Superglue to fix it.
    – You can also bond two pieces of cured polymer clay (that will not be baked again), with these glues.
    – Never use nail polish on your polymer clay jewelry. Nail polish is very corrosive for them.
    – Polymer clay is oil base, so don’t worry if you see your pieces producing oil for awhile even after cured. This will keep it conditioned. You can gently wipe it with a paper tissue or a soft and dry cloth.
